All That We Know So Far

Now that we've got this thing rolling, let's get some information out there...

We found out about Baby G's existence very early on in the proceedings, as Mommy G happened to have a prescheduled Ob/Gyn appointment just a couple days after she first thought she might be late. Said doctor offered and executed a pregnancy test, and - voila! - there he/she/it is! (Side note: for whatever reason, we seem to find ourselves using masculine pronouns when referring to Baby G, which will prove problematic if the gender is determined otherwise.) So just a few weeks in, in early April 2007, we knew we had a baby on the way.

Of course, as those of you who have lived through a pregnancy can attest, getting the news that early is a real mixed blessing. Since the highest risk for miscarriage is in the first three months of pregnancy, most people wait until after that time to start spreading the word. (Obviously, the intent is to avoid the extremely uncomfortable set of phone calls you would have to make to retract the previous baby news.) We had to go nearly 2 months without letting the secret out, which is no small feat when you consider that Mommy G couldn't have any more alcohol. We're at that age where any change in a woman's drinking habits starts a wildfire of raised eyebrows and speculation. But between trips out of town and random business here and there, we managed to keep it quiet.

Our first anniversary was April 29, 2007. We had planned a nice trip to Maui, returning to the site of our honeymoon a year earlier. Mommy G thought the biggest problem would be giving up afternoon mai tais and bottles of wine with dinner. Then we discovered morning sickness. From about a week prior to our trip through a week after, poor Mommy G was a mess. Nauseous 24/7 (notice that it wasn't just in the "morning"). She rarely actually threw up, but had little interest in food of any type and spent most of our vacation either laying down poolside or laying down up in the room. I get motion sickness and know all too well what a drag it is to feel like you're about to boot for an extended period of time, but I can't imagine how much it sucks to feel like that for 2-3 weeks straight.

Mommy G's parents came into town on Mothers' Day weekend, and we knew we couldn't fool them for long. So we told them and my parents that weekend - a nice Mothers' Day gift for all involved. Of course, we were still under the 3-month mark, so they were all sworn to secrecy for a few more weeks, which almost killed them.

We finally started spreading the word at the beginning of June, culminating with the genesis of this blog as a means to keep people apprised without making baby news a full time job. (And letting people decide for themselves whether they actually want to read it all.)

Now, the first question everyone asks is, of course, "When are you due?" Well, according to the magical pregnancy wheel of fortune, Baby G is due to arrive on December 10, 2007. (Has anyone seen this thing??? It's unbelievable - it clearly demonstrates that this due date estimation business is an inexact science. You'd think they would take some measurements, maybe do some lab tests, and a fairly sophisticated computer program would spit out your due date. Nope. They ask you when your last period was, then they whip out this little cardboard wheel that looks like one of those old "Stars of the Northern Hemisphere" educational tools. They spin it around, and - poof! - there's your due date. Just bizarre. And this is a really long-winded way of saying that you shouldn't put too much faith in 12/10 being the day.)

The next thing everyone wants to know is, "What are you having?" If you read our first post, you know that we don't know yet. But we intend to find out at our ultrasound appointment on August 1st. We are planners, and surprises make us nervous/crabby/not a whole lot of fun to be around. So if all you care about is whether it's a boy or a girl, check back in early August.

One last very important thing: all tests to date have been normal, which means that mom and baby are both healthy and progressing as expected.

Zach is right - it was a killer keeping the secret. Fortunately we were out of the country for 2-1/2 weeks during that time. It was hard not telling anyone, but the longer it went I was so scared that something would slip out just in casual conversation. We're so excited and can't wait for December to see our grandson / granddaughter. I'm like Allison, waiting to find out the gender so I can start buying...... We saw such adorable baby clothes in Europe, but I couldn't buy anything!
